The representative
of both Daihonzan, Eiheiji and Sojiji. It goes without
saying that the root of Dogen Zenji and
Keizan Zenji’s Buddha-dharma was Shikantaza. It was because
they were able to freely develop this that it is called
the Way of Buddha. If the teaching is true, but it is
not accompanied with actual practice, then it simply
ends up being empty theory. Even if there is a word for
“Truth,” Truth is something that cannot be seen or heard.
You must know that there are many more things that cannot
be seen that things which can be seen. It
is also very important to have faith in Truth and principles
that we cannot see.
It hardly needs to be said that the basis Buddhism, as
well as religions, is to treat all living things, including
people, with great care. And yet looking at recent social
conditions, it seems to me that we have reached the nadir
of moral decay and desolation of the human sprit. I feel
it is because of the dreadful way material civilization
has developed that the human spirit (kokoro) has been left
behind. Shakyamuni Buddha’s teaching was about the mind,
the heart, and the spirit as expressed in the teaching
“There is no Buddha-dharma outside the mind.” “Mind” or
“Kokoro” is to be thoroughly sincere and faithful. It is
also said that “Sincerity is Way of Heaven, to be sincere
is the Way of people.”

It is through the actual practice of
Dogen Zenji and Keizan Zenji’s teaching that the flower
blooms and fruit is produced.
That is why it is called the Way of Buddha.
